Located just about 35 minutes from the Toland Adobe, our Bisbee vacation rental, the Coronado National Memorial offers visitors the opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of Arizona’s landscape. If you’re looking to spend an afternoon hiking, it’s an ideal place to do so. The National Memorial is maintained by the National Park Service. It was established in 1941 to commemorate the Coronado Expedition of 1540 to 1542.
When you arrive at Coronado, you may want to make your first stop the Visitor’s Center. You will find the information that you need in order to safely hike the trails and explore the Coronado Cave. You can also browse the exhibits and learn more about the history behind the memorial site. It’s open daily from 8 am to 4pm, with the exception of Christmas day.
Hiking in the Park
There are more than 8 miles of hiking trails in the park with various elevations and levels of difficulty. The diverse landscape includes juniper pine forests, oak woodlands, and grasslands. It’s important to remember your sunscreen and to bring plenty of water, no matter what trails you choose. If you’re not an experienced hiker, it may be best to stick to the easier path, Coronado Peak Trail. If you’re ready to take on a challenge, difficult paths include the Crest Trail, Yaqui Ridge Trail, and Joe’s Canyon Trail.
To explore the Coronado Cave, it is necessary to hike .5 miles to reach the entrance. From there, be prepared to scramble over rocks, which may be slippery, in order to make the descent to the floor of the cave. You should be in good physical shape and have appropriate footwear. It’s also important to bring light sources, since the cave is pitch black inside, and the park service recommends wearing a helmet and carrying a whistle.
Even if you aren’t up for a day of hiking in the wilderness, a trip to the Visitor’s Center will help you learn more about the area and the history of the Coronado Expedition. With its location along the border of Mexico, this monument serves as an important reminder of the deep ties between the US and Mexico throughout history. Coronado National Memorial is a super short drive from Bisbee, making it a great day trip.
