Bisbee is a truly unique place that attracts people for a variety of reasons. For nature lovers, there’s so much to explore and appreciate in this area. Book your stay at the Toland Adobe, our dog-friendly Bisbee vacation rental home, and enjoy a day of birdwatching with the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory.
The Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory, or SABO for short, is actually an organization that is run out of Bisbee. For anyone interested in birding, SABO runs programs at private and public lands in the region. There are a variety of workshops
and walks that you can attend, so check the schedule of upcoming events when you visit.
From the SABO website:
Due to hummingbirds’ migratory patterns, banding takes place in April, May, July, August, and September. The greatest numbers of birds and diversity of species are usually present from early August through mid-September. Dates for banding sessions, workshops, and other activities are listed in SABO’s Calendar of Events.
Birding is a popular activity in Southeastern Arizona because so many species call this spot home. Diverse habitats and a close proximity to Mexico make it a place where many birds migrate to throughout the year. The best time to visit is anytime of the year, depending on what species you are hoping to see. Each season brings something different, but April through September is the best time to observe the most diverse Southwestern species.
You can look forward to seeing hummingbirds, warblers, sparrows, orioles, trogons, flycatchers, and many butterflies throughout the summer months. For any bird watching excursion, you will want to be sure to bring your binoculars and wear comfortable shoes. Have your camera ready to capture birds in flight.
You don’t have to be an avid bird watcher to appreciate the natural wonders that Southeastern Arizona has to offer. If you have time while staying at or near our dog friendly Bisbee vacation rental, a bird watching activity with SABO is definitely worth looking into.
